Rosh Hashanah, literally head of the year, marks the start of the Jewish New Year. Tradition teaches us that Rosh Hashanah is the ‘birthday of the world’, celebrating the creation of humanity as told in the biblical creation story. Observed on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of the Yamin Noraim, the High Holydays or Days of Awe: a ten day period of prayer, self-examination and repentance culminating with the Fast day of Yom Kippur.
