Become a Member

At Etz Chayim, membership is about belonging, being a part of something greater, being part of a community.

We understand community to be an extended family. Our community is a place where all Jews have a place, regardless of their age, marital status, sexual or gender identity, political leanings, or level religious observance. Etz Chayim is a warm, open, diverse, and welcoming community. We are home to families, singles, interfaith and same-sex couples, retirees and pensioners, children, adolescents, and young adults. As the only Progressive Jewish community in Melbourne’s south east suburbs, Etz Chayim offers our members a place to explore and express their Judaism on their own terms, guilt-free, in an egalitarian environment.

Both women and men are afforded the same opportunities in ritual participation and leadership positions. We offer relevant, meaningful, and interactive Shabbat and festival services, personalised life cycle events, compassionate pastoral care during times of difficulty, occasions to celebrate personal simchas, to volunteer for the local and wider community, Jewish learning opportunities for people of all ages, musical concerts, community theatre, and more. Our members are entitled High Holiday tickets, rabbinic led services at life cycle events, and discounted rates on various events, like our very popular Women’s Seder, and our education programs.

Most importantly, membership at Etz Chayim provides people with another place to call home – a place to socialise with other Jews, to feel proud about our Jewish identity and expression, to give back and to receive, to feel accepted and valued as we are. Bruchim Ha’Ba’im – Welcome and Come join us!

Etz Chayim Choir

Sing with our other talented community members in our friendly, fun choir.

Etz Chayim has a tradition of amateur choirs going back several years. The choir sings at services on the High Holy Days and selected special occasions. The choir is, as much as any other ‘group’ or activity in the Etz Chayim community, a meeting place for those who enjoy the friendships and social interactions enabled by making music together. The Etz Chayim Community Choir welcomes anyone of any age who loves music and enjoys singing. Please contact the Etz Chayim office if you would like more information.

Soup Kitchen

For community members who may be unwell, recuperating after surgery or illness, or just in need of some support, we are pleased to offer freezer meals from our own little Etz Chayim soup kitchen! The vegetarian soups are prepared and packaged by our volunteers and available on-site at the shul. To collect a meal or to arrange for a volunteer to deliver one to you, please contact the office.

Please note: donations of clean plastic containers (preferably small serve, ie. 1L or less) are always appreciated!

Floral Acts of Kindness

We create bouquets that are hand-delivered to members of our community to brighten their day. Supported by the talented Dr Isabelle de Solier, and her charity Floral Acts of Kindness Inc., we participate in flower arranging workshops and learn to create beautiful masterpieces to support our Etz Chayim community.
